Notification of Change to ASME B56.1 - 2000
This release is to make you aware of which Cascade attachments are affected by the recent change to ASME B56.1-2000 (Safety Standard for Low Lift and High Lift Trucks) that went into effect at the end of May, 2001.
For Offset Loading ASME B56.1 - 2000 section 7.6.4(i) states:
"When trucks are fitted with side shifting attachments, having substantial offset, the lateral stacking stability test shall be conducted with the test load fully shifted to the least stable configuration."
Substantial Offset is defined by ISO and ASME B56.1 as:
Truck Capacity Substantial Offset
0-6,300 kg (0-13,850lb) > 100mm (4")
6,300-10,000kg (13,850-22,000) > 150mm (6 ")
10,000-20,000kg (22,000-44,000) > 250mm (10 ")
Note that these are nominal dimensions as our Sideshifter shifts 100mm +/- 1mm from centerline.
What this means is that if an attachment's sideshift is greater than the "substantial offset" it will be rated in the least stable configuration. Also note that most OEMs will be "dual rating". That is, they will provide both a rating using the old standard (load on center) and the new (least stable configuration). This is the best compromise, as the "Offset Rating" could be substantially lower than the "On Center".
As far as Cascade's standard product, we have determined that only the sideshifting Sliding Arm Clamps (and one Sideshifter) fall into the "Substantial Offset" category. As a result, we have prepared the attached spreadsheets containing specifications on these units. Two additional specifications have been added. They are "Maximum Offset" and "Lateral CG @ Maximum Offset". These values will be added to our specification drawings, price pages and other published documentation at the next reprint.
